Classic French Toast

This Father’s Day we pigged out on French Toast. It was heavenly… The toast were firm on the outside and fluffy inside. I go for only powdered sugar and fruit on mine. The Family enjoys drowning theirs in syrup. But to each his/her own. No matter how you like it, these French Toast were light and we didn’t feel stuffed to the gills after our feast. This is what I did:

Ingredients

  • 6 – 8 thick slices of Challah Bread (acceptable subs are Brioche and Sourdough)
  • 6 Eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups Milk (I used 2%)
  • 1/8 tsp ground Nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp ground Cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1/8 tsp Salt
  • Butter

Steps

Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Place a wire rack in a cookie sheet, set aside.

In a large bowl whisk all of the ingredients except for the Bread and Butter.

In a baking dish, place the sliced Bread in a single layer. Pour the Egg mixture over it. Soak for 10 min per side or until fully soaked. I did this in four slice batches.

Heat 2 tbsp of Butter in a skillet over medium heat. Fry the soaked bread for 2-3 min per side. I was able to make 4 slices before adding another 2 tbsp of Butter. As you make the French Toast, place them on the wire rack and keep them in the oven to stay warm. (That’s why I’ve got those attractive lines across my French Toast.)

Sprinkle with Powdered Sugar and serve with warm Maple Syrup. To complete the breakfast serve with my Fancy Scrambled Eggs!
